The short answer
For a Checkr background check ordered on you, start with the official Candidate Portal. It provides report progress and access to your report. Read any outstanding request before deciding whether you need to act; a report label alone does not tell you the employer’s final hiring decision.
This is independent guidance for US job candidates. Background Check Explained is not Checkr, cannot look up your status, and does not accept screening documents.
Is Checkr legit, and is this invitation genuine?
Checkr is a background screening company listed in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s reporting-company directory. That verifies the company’s identity; it does not authenticate an email, text or recruiter claiming to represent it.
If a request is unexpected, contact the hiring company through a channel you already know. Ask whether it ordered a Checkr report. Reach the portal through Checkr’s own website rather than an unfamiliar message link. Do not send identity documents or a Social Security number to this website or post them in a public discussion.
The useful question is not just “Does this company exist?” It is “Does this request belong to the employer and screening process I recognize?”
How do you check your Checkr background check status?
Use the Candidate Portal, rather than the customer dashboard used by employers. Follow the portal’s current authentication instructions and use information matching what you supplied for the report. Its login page directs candidates with a work location outside the United States to a separate international portal.
Once you have access, keep a private note of:
- the overall status and any individual component still open;
- the requested action, if one is displayed;
- the estimate shown and when you checked it;
- what you submitted and any confirmation.
This is a suggested tracking method, not an official Checkr form. If you cannot access the report, follow the support route from Checkr’s Help Center. Avoid buying a personal background check merely to solve an access problem with an employer-ordered report.
What do Pending, Suspended, Clear and Consider mean?
Checkr’s report-reading guide describes these labels. The table gives short interpretations; your actual report and requests remain important.
| Label | Meaning in Checkr’s guidance | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Processing is underway | Look for a specific outstanding request before assuming nothing is needed |
| Suspended | Processing has paused because information is missing or a search could not finish | Read and respond to the relevant request through the verified route |
| Clear | The completed check returned no information requiring review under the employer’s guidelines | Ask the employer about its next hiring step |
| Consider | The completed report contains information the employer may review | Read the findings; distinguish accurate information from an error |
Consider does not itself mean rejection. Likewise, a completed individual search is not necessarily a completed package. For comparisons with other providers and labels such as Review, see background-check status meanings. Do not transfer one provider’s definitions to another.
How long does a Checkr background check take?
There is no single deadline for every Checkr package. The overview in Checkr’s general timing article describes three to five days for CRA employment checks. That is general guidance, not a promised completion date for your order; the overview does not label that range as business days.
Use your portal estimate and any outstanding request to frame a specific question. For example: “Is the court search still open, or is something required from me?” Checkr identifies search selection, record availability and candidate information as factors affecting timing.
An estimate moving later is a reason to check what remains open, not proof that you failed. Our delay guide explains how to follow up; the duration overview compares timing across providers.
What does Checkr check, and what if something is wrong?
Ask which searches the employer ordered. A provider name does not establish that criminal, employment, education, driving and credit checks are all included. Start with what employment background checks show if you need to distinguish components.
For incorrect or incomplete information, identify the exact entry and gather relevant supporting records. The CFPB directory explains your right to dispute report content with the reporting company. Use Checkr’s official correction route; our background-check errors guide helps organize the concern.
If you receive an employer notice about a possible adverse decision, read its instructions and respond promptly. A dispute and a hiring decision are separate matters; do not assume contacting the provider alone tells the employer everything it needs to know. The FTC explains candidate notices and dispute rights.
Your next step
Identify which task is yours: verify an invitation, access the report, supply requested information, question an inaccurate entry, or ask the employer about its decision. Use the matching official channel and keep personal records private.
