The short answer
Yes, staffing and temp agencies may request background checks for candidates, but not every agency or assignment uses the same check. The agency, the client or a screening company may be involved. Ask who is conducting the check, what it includes, and whom to contact about your particular placement.
A check requested before a new assignment is a different question from how to list a past staffing job on a later employer’s form. For that, see staffing agency or worksite: what to put on a background check.
What can a staffing agency background check include?
Depending on the role and the selected screening package, a check may include criminal-record searches or employment or education verification. A driving-record check may be relevant for a driving role. Do not assume that every check includes every component or that a drug test is the same thing as a background report. Ask what is being requested for your placement. Our guide to what background checks show explains why scope varies.
Who orders the check: the agency or the client?
The arrangement varies. An agency may coordinate screening, a client may request a check, or a screening company may process the report. The company that contacts you about the check is not necessarily the company that will employ you. Ask the recruiter for the name of the screening provider, if one is involved, and the correct contact for status or document requests.
For an employment report from a background-reporting company, the Federal Trade Commission explains that the employer generally must give you a separate written disclosure and obtain written permission. Rights and procedures depend on the kind of check and who conducts it.
Do temp agencies check your employment history?
They may, if employment verification is part of the requested check. It is not automatic for every placement. For example, HireRight describes verifying details such as dates and title; its procedure does not establish what every provider checks. If a former job was through an agency, identify the actual employing organization and keep client assignments separate when the form asks for them.
Will an earlier background check cover a new assignment?
Do not assume it will. A new client or position may request different information or another check. Ask whether the agency needs a new authorization, whether another provider is involved and what remains outstanding. Avoid submitting another application or sending documents to a new contact until you have confirmed the request is legitimate.
What if a staffing agency background check is delayed?
Ask whether the provider needs anything from you, whether an individual search is still open, and whether the report has been completed. A delay alone does not establish that you failed. Use the verified provider or recruiter contact, and see our background-check delays guide for a practical follow-up message.
If employment verification is the issue, ask which employer, dates or document need clarification. A staffing agency and a client can hold different records; neither a client’s inability to confirm agency employment nor a request for documents automatically proves that your history is wrong.
What if the report is inaccurate?
Request the report and identify the specific item before responding. If an employer may take adverse action based on a report from a background-reporting company, the FTC describes rights that include receiving a copy of the report and a summary of rights before the action. You can dispute inaccurate or incomplete information with the reporting company. Contact the hiring organization separately about its process; a dispute does not guarantee that a position will be held. See how to correct background-check errors.
Questions to ask before you send information
- Who is requesting the check and which screening company, if any, is involved?
- What components are requested for this role, and who can answer status questions?
- If a document is needed, what is the minimum information required and where is the verified submission channel?
- Which employer or assignment needs clarification, and which dates are being checked?
Do not post your Social Security number, full report or identity documents in an open message. Confirm the destination independently and ask whether sensitive details can be redacted without obscuring the information needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do all temp agencies run background checks?
No single rule describes every agency or assignment. Ask the agency about the specific placement and screening requested.
Does a staffing agency background check mean I have the job?
A request for screening does not by itself establish a final hiring decision. Ask the recruiter about the status of your offer and any remaining steps.
Can a criminal record appear on a staffing background check?
It can, depending on the searches ordered, the records found, reporting rules and the circumstances. It does not automatically determine the hiring outcome. See what background checks show and ask what is being checked.
