The short answer

There is no single reliable completion time for every Amazon background check. The checks requested, the records involved and any information still needed can affect the wait. An application status does not necessarily tell you which part of screening is outstanding or whether an employer has made its decision.

For an hourly job handled through hiring.amazon.com, sign in to the candidate account and review your application and messages. If the screening company sent you a separate invitation, follow its verified instructions too. Contact Amazon hiring support or your recruiter when you need clarification. For other roles, use the contact and instructions in your own application.

This independent guide is for US job seekers. Background Check Explained is not Amazon or a screening company and cannot see your application or report.

How long does an Amazon background check take?

Timing depends on the checks ordered and whether the screening company needs additional information. A criminal-record search, employment verification or other requested check may take different amounts of time. The employer may also review the results after a report is completed. A time estimate from another applicant is not a deadline for your case.

Amazon’s hourly hiring FAQ says background-check results and how long they take can affect the process; it does not provide a universal completion time. For a broader explanation, see how long employment background checks take and why a background check may be delayed.

Where can I check the status?

Amazon’s FAQ directs hourly applicants to sign in to their candidate account and open Jobs I’ve Applied To to check their application. An application page may show appointment or hiring information without explaining the status of each background-check search.

If a screening provider sent you an invitation, check the link and instructions from that provider for screening-specific requests or updates. Confirm the provider’s identity through your application or hiring contact before sending personal information. A provider’s report status and Amazon’s hiring decision are separate questions.

For a corporate or other application, use the portal and recruiter or support contact provided for that role. Do not assume the hourly application steps apply to every Amazon job.

What should I do if the check seems delayed?

  1. Review your messages and candidate account. Look for an unanswered request, a required form or an appointment update.
  2. Check the screening invitation. If a provider asked for information, respond through its verified channel and keep any confirmation.
  3. Ask a specific question. Contact the provider about a requested document or outstanding screening item. Ask the hiring contact about the application, employer review or start date.
  4. Avoid guessing at the result. A long wait alone does not establish that you failed or passed. Ask whether anything is needed from you.

You might ask: “Is there anything I need to provide for my background check, and who should I contact about the status of my application?” Avoid sending a Social Security number or a full report in an unsolicited message or public post.

What if the report contains an error?

Identify the company that prepared the report from your notice or screening paperwork. Request a copy and identify the specific item you believe is inaccurate. The FTC explains your rights when an employer uses a background report, including the opportunity to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information with the reporting company. Follow any instructions and timing in your notice, and communicate with the hiring contact as appropriate.

Our guide to fixing background-check errors explains how to organize the issue and supporting information. A dispute does not guarantee an offer or require you to post your report publicly.

Frequently asked questions

Does a pending Amazon application mean I failed the background check?

No. An application status alone does not establish the outcome of a background report or an employer’s decision. Check for specific requests and ask your hiring contact what the status means for your role.

Does Amazon use the same background-check provider for every job?

Do not assume it does. Use the company name and contact details in your own screening invitation or notice. If the provider is unclear, ask your hiring contact.

Does a completed background check guarantee my start date?

No. Screening completion and the employer’s hiring process are different steps. Ask the hiring contact to confirm your status and any start-date instructions.

Your next step

Check your candidate account and screening messages for outstanding requests. If the reason for the wait is unclear, ask the verified provider about screening and your hiring contact about the application or start date.
